Jean-Pierre Perreault (1947-2002)

Sous la direction de Ginelle Chagnon assistée de Sophie Breton, les finissants de 5 écoles canadiennes de formation professionnelle en danse contemporaine travaillent le matériau chorégraphique issu des œuvres Joe et Rodolphe. // Figure de proue de la danse contemporaine canadienne, Jean-Pierre Perreault (1947-2002) a créé des œuvres qui ont fortement marqué son époque et connu un large rayonnement. Il a contribué à l’élargissement du public et influencé des générations de chorégraphes. Perreault était un créateur complet : concepteur de chorégraphies, il signait aussi les scénographies et les costumes de ses œuvres. Dans un univers fait de vastes espaces architecturaux, il situait des êtres fragiles, des danseurs intenses, authentiques, « perreauesques ». Courses, saccades, ruptures, sons et rythmiques sont caractéristiques du style Perreault, une danse qui s’ancre dans l’espace, s’inscrit profondément dans un lieu et produit en partie sa propre musique. Les œuvres de Jean-Pierre Perreault nous convient à un perpétuel rendez-vous avec la nature humaine.//


Under the supervision of Ginelle Chagnon, assisted by Sophie Breton, the graduating students of 5 professional training schools in Canada are gathering to perform a work inspired by Joe and Rodolphe. // Jean-Pierre Perreault (1947-2002), created monumental choreographic works emblematic of their time that captured the audience’s attention across Canada and Europe. These works also contributed to the development of the Canadian contemporary dance scene. Perreault had an enlarged conception of his works. As well as making the choreography, he also created the costumes and imagines a specific environment. In a usually rather large scenic space, he situates fragile beings, intense and authentic dancers. While his dance inhabits the whole space, his movement is often abrupt, photogenic, rhythmical and most of the times, the source of sound. Through his works that are anchored in specific site and in control of their own musicality, he conveys us to be observant of human nature.

School of Contemporary Dancers / semaine 5 / week 5

La première semaine de répétition s'est bien déroulée ici à Winnipeg avec les jeunes de l'école (School of Contemporary Dancers).  Nous avons appris quelques séquences de la pièce Rodolphe et quelques séquences de Joe.  Les jeunes ont bien retenu les dynamismes de chaque séquence ce qui permet de révéler avec précision la musicalité de la chorégraphie. 

Les étudiants sont très habiles à jouer avec les quelques éléments de Rodolphe qui se prêtent à l'improvisation.  Cette séquence deviendra certainement leur spécialité de groupe ! 

Jeudi le 8 mars en après-midi, nous avons eu la visite exceptionnelle de Mr.Tom Stroud qui a dansé dans plusieurs projets de Jean-Pierre Perreault entre 1986 et 1990.  Jean-Pierre et Tom se sont rencontrés à l'Université Simon Fraser à Vancouver lors de la production de Refrains, an Opera alors que Tom était étudiant au département de théâtre.  Cette rencontre a été importante pour les deux artistes incitant l'un vers l'art du mouvement et l'autre vers la poésie des corps peu entrainés en danse.  Tom a partagé avec nous l'histoire de son parcours depuis cette rencontre au début des années '80 jusqu'à son arrivée à Winnipeg dix ans plus tard à titre de directeur artistique de la compagnie Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers.  Tom est maintenant professeur au département de théâtre de l'Université du Manitoba.

Il était très heureux de venir rencontrer ces jeunes danseurs qui sont en processus d'appropriation de la chorégraphie Joe, que Tom a dansé lors de la reprise de 1989 et de la coproduction de 1994.  Il était, je crois, très touché de voir les étudiants danser cette pièce.

Cette visite nous a permis de constater concrètement ce que la croisée des chemins entre deux artistes peut occasionner.  C'est après tout une réalité importante de la pratique artistique et une partie de ce que nous espérons à la sortie de l'école. 

Merci Tom pour ta présence auprès de nous, mais surtout pour nous avoir si bien communiqué ta passion pour l'art de la performance et de nous avoir inspiré par la profondeur de ton savoir.  C'était très agréable de te revoir.

The first week of rehearsals ended really well here in Winnipeg with the 3rd and 4th year students of the School of Contemporary Dancers.  We linked together a few dances phrases of Rodolphe and of Joe.  The students retained well the different dynamics of each sequence and it was a pleasure to watch their Friday run, putting to light the musicality of each sequence.

The students are really good at improvising together with the few elements of Rodolphe.  This will certainly become their specialty !

On Thursday the 8th of March we had the pleasure of the exceptional visit of Mr.Tom Stroud, who danced for Jean-Pierre Prreault in a few projects between 1986 and 1990.  Tom and Jean-Pierre met at Simon Fraser University as Tom was then a student at the Theater Department and Jean-Pierre was a guest choreographer.  This meeting was important for both artists as it encouraged one towards the rigor of dance and the other towards the poetry of untrained bodies.  Tom shared with us his artistic path from that moment in the beginning of the '80s until his arrival in Winnipeg in 1990 to take on the Artistic Directorship of Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers.  Tom is now a teacher at the Theater Department of Manitoba University.

I think he was very happy to come and meet the students as they are in the process of appropriating the Joe choreography that Tom performed during the remake of 1989 and the co-production of 1994.  I think it was moving for Tom to see these young dancers show excerpts of this work. It was fascinating to understand the crossing of the path of two engaged artists. It is after all an important part of the reality of every artistic path and it is certainly what we expect will happen when one leaves a training school.

Thank you Tom for your presence amongst us.  Thank you for sharing your passion of the performing arts and inspiring us with the dept of your knowledge.  It was a real pleasure to see you again.
