School of Toronto Dance Theatre/ en répétition / in rehearsal

Il me semble que cela fait déjà très longtemps que nous parcourrons les routes du Canada pour enseigner Joe et Rodolphe aux étudiants des écoles de formation professionnelle.  Vendredi, notre séjour auprès des étudiants finissants de la School of Toronto Dance Theatre s’est terminé avec un enchaînement complet de leur spectacle de fin d’année.  Alors que cette étape d’apprentissage de la matière chorégraphique se termine ici à Toronto, je dois dire que le temps a passé bien vite.

Les danseurs ont bien dansé leur dernier enchaînement faisant preuve de maîtrise et de sensibilité.  Ces jeunes ont bien réagi au travail et je sais que la directrice, Patricia Fraser, saura les diriger lors des répétitions de cette pièce jusqu’à notre rencontre du mois de juin. L’extrait de 15 minutes pour leur spectacle de fin d’année mettra bien en valeur la capacité des étudiants à entrer dans l’univers de Joe et j’en suis ravie.

La semaine dernière nous avons eu la visite de deux ex-Joes, Julia Aplin et de Darryl Tracy.  Julia dansait avec Dancemakers lors de la reprise de Joe en 1994 et Darryl faisait partie de la distribution de 1996 et il fait partie de la faculté de cette école.  Lors d’une rencontre jeudi dernier, Julia a raconté son parcours en danse, ce qui est toujours inspirant pour les auditeurs.  Par la même occasion, la directrice de l’école Patricia Fraser et son associée Susan Macphearson étaient présentes et elles nous ont aussi parlé de leur croisée de chemin avec Jean-Pierre Perreault.  Quelle magnifique rencontre ce fut.  D’ailleurs, comme toutes les rencontres que nous avons occasionnées lors de notre passage dans les écoles, celle-ci nous a permis de raviver notre compréhension de l’histoire de la danse au Canada, de voir comment chaque artiste a sa propre destinée et que la croisée de ces multiples chemins tisse la fibre de notre communauté de la danse au Canada.

Merci à toute l’équipe de la School of Toronto Dance Theatre pour leur accueil et leur travail auprès des étudiants.  Un immense merci va à la directrice Patricia Fraser.  Son engagement envers l’éducation de ces jeunes est sans relâche.

STDT / LA-O en répétition/ in rehearsal

Dans les semaines qui suivront, nous mettrons en ligne des textes écrits par des étudiants, des professeurs et directeurs des écoles que nous avons visitées. Ces textes apparaîtront de temps en temps en attendant que toutes les écoles se rassemblent à Ottawa pour le spectacle du 12 juin 2012 au Festival Danse Canada.  Cet évènement est fort attendu car ce sera très émouvant de revoir ces soixante-trois jeunes réunis dans un même lieu, dans une même chorégraphie, danser sur un même tempo sur la scène du Théâtre du Centre National des Arts à Ottawa.

It seems that we have been on the road for a very long time now, teaching “Joe et Rodolphe” in the professional training dance schools.  We ended our journey last Friday as the 3rd year students of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre did an informal showing of their work in front of their peers and some of their teachers.  Considering that this lengthy learning process in the five schools is just completed, I have to admit that it seems that time went by very quickly. 

STDT / dernier enchainement / last runthrough

Our last run of “Joe et Rodolphe” was well danced, the students were well invested and exercising controel over the choreography.    Their sensitivity to the work has grown over the last few days and it was a pleasure to witness the transformation.  Artistic director, Patricia Fraser, will continue the rehearsal directorship of this work until we meet in June for the final work in Ottawa.  I am happy to say that their fifteen minute excerpt presented in their school performances next week will show how well these young dancers can integrate the world of “Joe”.

STDT / groupe et Julia Aplin

Last week, we had the visit of two ex-Joes, Julia Aplin and Darryl Tracy.  Julia was part of Dancemakers as this company joined forces with Winnipeg Contemporary dancers and Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault for the reprise of “Joe” in 1994, and Darryl was part of the 1996 cast of this same work.  During Thursday’s chat with the students, Julia Aplin and Patricia Fraser talked about their dance path and how they came about meeting Jean-Pierre Perreault.  Susan Macphearson was also present and she proceeded to tell us how she and Jean-Pierre found themselves involved in the same project in the mid eighties.  It was another inspiring artist chat and I thank them for their involvement and for sharing their stories with us.  Thinking back on all the meetings that we have had in all the different schools, it has been a history lesson in contemporary dance and it showed us that all of our individual paths in dance intertwine and create the artistic fiber of the Canadian dance scene.

I wish to thank the whole team of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre for their welcoming and their hard work.  An immense hug and thank you to Patricia Fraser.  Her dedication to education is just tremendous. 

In the upcoming weeks we will put online some of the texts that were written either by students, faculty or school directors.  They will continue to inspire us while waiting for the final part of this project, when we meet in Ottawa for the June 12th performance at the 2012 edition of the Festival Dance Canada.  This gathering of the sixty-three students will be quite the event as we try to orchestrate them into one choreographic work, one tempo and unto one stage, the Theater of the National Art Center in Ottawa.

Nous voici enfin à l’École du Toronto Dance Theatre, la dernière escale de notre tournée des écoles de formation professionnelle.  Cette étape était bien anticipée!  Je suis heureuse de dire que depuis notre arrivée ici à Toronto, nous avons accompli de l’excellent travail lors de cette première semaine de répétitions.  Depuis la classe du matin jusqu’à la fin de leur période de répétition de Joe et Rodolphe à 18h, Chantal Baudouin, Olivia Citter, Helen Cox, Neesha de Souza, Jessie Garon, Amelia Iverson, Megumi Kokuba, Jolyane Langlois, Amanda LaRusic, Sarah Leuschen, Sarah Reid, Lara Roberts, Anastasia Shivrina, Jarrett Siddall, Kristine Van Kessel, Jelena Vujičić, Natalie Westerbeek et Angela Zhou n’ont pas eu le temps de penser à autre chose que de plonger dans le travail de Jean-Pierre Perreault.

Ils sont dix-huit jeunes danseurs à apprendre des séquences de mouvements, dans une corporéité qui leur est étrangère. Ils tentent aussi de comprendre pourquoi ils sont en costumes alors que ceux-ci ne sont pas encore ajustés à leur taille, que nous sommes pieds nus plutôt qu’en bottines pour cette première semaine de travail . Ce sont les défis de l’interprète qu’ils rencontrent en apprenant ce répertoire.  Comment voir plus grand que le studio, que les pas qui nous sont transmis, comment se projeter dans l’inconnu, dans l’insaisissable.   

Comment faire confiance à l’oeuvre chorégraphique...

Depuis jeudi dernier nous accédons à cette autre réalité.  Même sans les bottines, le quatrième jour de répétition nous a permis de pénétrer à l’intérieur de l’immensité de Joe.  Cette chorégraphie exige notre écoute, notre force, notre endurance et notre détermination.  Elle nous révèle la puissance et la poésie de danser en collectivité.

Espérons que nous saurons poursuivre notre bonne direction dans ce travail en utilisant des bottines la semaine prochaine. Cette différence sera énorme pour les jeunes danseurs.  Elle affectera la pesanteur de leur jambes et procurera un autre élément sonore à utiliser.

Hello!

Here we are, finally, at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, the last stop of our tour in the professional training schools.  We were looking forward to being here!  During our first week of rehearsals, here in Toronto, I am happy to say that we accomplished a lot.  From their morning class until the end of the Joe et Rodolphe rehearsal day at 18h, Chantal Baudouin, Olivia Citter, Helen Cox, Neesha de Souza, Jessie Garon, Amelia Iverson, Megumi Kokuba, Jolyane Langlois, Amanda LaRusic, Sarah Leuschen, Sarah Reid, Lara Roberts, Anastasia Shivrina, Jarrett Siddall, Kristine Van Kessel, Jelena Vujičić, Natalie Westerbeek and Angela Zhou never gave much thought to anything else but to dive into the choreographic world of Jean-Pierre Perreault.

These eighteen young dancers are working hard at learning choreographic sequences in a type of movement that feels a bit strange to their body.  They wonder why we are working in costumes already as they are not yet fitted to their body, and how this will all feel when they start wearing their army boots for the second week of rehearsals.  These are some of the challenges that an interpreter faces while learning this repertoire.  How to be a part of something bigger than the environment of the studio or than the steps that we learn ? How do we project ourselves into the unknown or in an intangible situation... How to have be confident that the choreographic work will show us the way?

So, as of last Thursday, we started to access this other place.  Our fourth day of rehearsal took us to the immense world of Joe. It made us listen, endure, work together and in strenght.  It revealed once more the power and the poetry of dancing in collectivity.

Let’s hope that next week we can pursue the quality of this work as we add the element of the boots to our journey.  It will affect the dancers more than they anticipate as sound will be different and their movements will not be so easy to manage.

The Ottawa School of Dance / Semaine 9 / Week 9

Bonjour,

Sophie et moi sommes dans le train qui nous amène vers Toronto.  Le temps passe vite. Il ne nous reste qu’une seule école à visiter.  Je vais tenter de mettre ce texte en ligne à partir de ce train!  Je crois que j’aurai le temps car le train a déjà pris 10 minutes de retard et nous sommes en route vers Cornwall...

Notre deuxième semaine c’est bien déroulée avec les jeunes de l’Ottawa School of Dance.  Sauf pour la cheville fragile de Caitlin et le doigt coupé de Jocelyn, tout c’est bien passé.  Nous avons travaillé fort sur les différents apprentissages provenant de Joe tout au long de la semaine.  Les quatre finissantes ont appris une courte séquence de ce qu’on appelle le LA-O et la Fente.  Les anciens Joes qui lisent ces lignes sauront de quoi il s’agit !  Nous avons fait des réchauffements de voix et renouvelé notre relation à la respiration.  Il n’est pas simple de danser tout en respirant.  Nos mouvements dansés ont différents dynamismes et il est parfois difficile de synchroniser le souffle, la voix et le corps qui danse.

Beau défi !

Mercredi dernier, tous les étudiants de l’Ottawa School of Dance ont profité d’une rencontre avec des danseurs qui ont travaillé au Groupe de la Place Royale lorsque Jean-Pierre Perreault y était.  Nous avons eu le privilège d’entendre chacun à leur tour Marc Boivin, Cathy Kyle et Suzanne McCarrey raconter leur parcours en danse et leur rencontre avec Perreault.  Étaient également de cette rencontre Sylvie Desrosiers, la directrice du programme contemporain de l’école, et moi même.  Nous avons aussi rapidement parlé de notre vie professionnelle pour tenter d’inspirer les jeunes danseurs de notre propre vécu.  Cette rencontre d’une heure fut passionnante et émouvante (nous n’avions pas vu Suzanne depuis si longtemps...).  Quel plaisir se fut de nous retrouver !  Ces artistes ont partagé leur savoir avec beaucoup d’éloquence et en toute générosité.  Un grand Merci !!!  Ces rencontres sont tellement importantes pour notre savoir collectif.

Au bout d’une deuxième semaine de travail, nous avons accompli notre mission de composer un extrait de 15 minutes qui sera dansé au spectacle de fin d’année et aussi à montrer du matériau chorégraphique pour la grande rencontre du mois de juin 2012.  Un GRAND merci à Sylvie Desrosiers pour sa passion et sa générosité.  Un grand merci à Mélissa, Danielle, Caitlin et Jocelyn pour leur excellent travail.  Merci à Cathy Kyle de prendre la relève pour diriger les danseurs dans Joe et Rodolphe.  Un autre merci à Fern Villeneuve pour savoir si bien s’occuper de nous.  Merci à Noreen et Ken pour l’usage de leur B&B !

Fente de Joe / Ottawa School of Dance

Hello,

Sophie and I are on the train that is taking us to Toronto.  Time goes by quickly.  We only have one more school to reach with this project.  I will attempt to put this new blog entry on line from this train.  I should make it since we already have a 10 minutes delay and we are not even in Cornwall yet!

Our second week at the Ottawa School of Dance went really well with the finishing students of the contemporary program of this school.  Apart from Caitlin’s bad ankle and Jocelyn’s bad cut and stitches in her left hand, we did well.  We worked hard on the different aspects of leaning sequences of Joe.  We learned an excerpt of what we call the LA-O and Fente.  The old Joes reading these lines know what I am referring to.  We did voice warm ups and learned how to dance, breathe and do voice at the same time.  Those three actions are not easy to do as the dynamics of every movement is not the same in this particular work and it is difficult to synchronize breath and motion.  It is all quite irregular.  Great challenge!

Adage de Joe / Ottawa School of Dance

Last Wednesday we had the tremendous pleasure of being a part of an Artist Chat with three ex dancers of Le Groupe de la Place Royale that crossed path with Jean-Pierre while he was there.  We had the privilege of listening to Marc Boivin, Cathy Kyle and Suzanne McCarrey talk about their artistic path and their work with Perreault.  Also at this talk were Sylvie Desrosiers (the director of the contemporary program at this school) and myself.  We also quickly told the students of our own artistic journey and our relationship to Perreault.  


All the guests were mesmerizing.  They candidly and generously talked about their lives with dance and I believe it was really inspiring for all the students of 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd year that were present at this talk. A great big THANK YOU to all these guests.  They make our knowledge and appreciation of Canadian dance that much better.

After a second week of work, we accomplished our mission once more.  The school has a fifteen minutes excerpt to present at their school show and the four graduating students have work to do until we meet in June 2012 for the last part of this project.  


I wish to thank Sylvie Desrosiers for her love of educating and her welcoming of this project in her school.  Thank you to Melissa, Danielle, Caitlin and Jocelyn for the good work in the Perreault world.  Thank you to Cathy Kyle for taking over rehearsals of Joe et Rodolphe with these graduating students. The Ottawa School of Dance / Semaine 8 / Week 8

Ottawa School of Dance / Jocelyn Todd et Danielle Duchesne

C’est au tour de Danielle Duchesne, Caitlin Kenney, Mélissa Roy et Jocelyn Todd de l’Ottawa School of Dance de se joindre au mouvement de Joe et Rodolphe en tournée dans les écoles.  Nous sommes en petit nombre ici.  Il y a quatre interprètes qui connaissent la relation de Jean-Pierre Perreault au Groupe de la Place Royale.  Ils connaissent aussi la fervente admiration de leur directrice Sylvie Desrosiers pour ce chorégraphe.  Elles sont très fières de pénétrer cet univers chorégraphique et heureuses d’enfin faire partie de cette grande famille.

Cette première semaine fut un peu plus courte que les autres avec la venue d'un congé de Pâques bien mérité. C’est le printemps et avec lui, une énergie renouvelée qui nous pousse à continuer le travail d’apprentissage qui nous portera jusqu’à la fin du projet.  Bon travail à ces jeunes danseurs. Notre deuxième semaine augure bien et elle sera très occupée.

Alors, bon congé de Pâques !

Mélissa Roy / Ottawa School of Dance / enchaînement du jeudi

It is now up to Danielle Duchesne, Caitlin Kenney, Mélissa Roy and Jocelyn Todd of the Ottawa School of Dance to join the Joe et Rodolphe project.  We are a small group here.  There are four dancers who know of the powerful relationship of Jean-Pierre Perreault to the Groupe de la Place Royale that was based here in Ottawa.  They also know of their artistic director’s, Sylvie Desrosiers, admiration for this choreographer.  They are proud and happy to finally step into this project as if it were joining a part of a big family.

The first week was a bit shorter than usual since the Easter holiday brings a well deserved day off. It is spring and with it comes the renewed energy that pushes us forward in the learning process and that will carry us to the end of the project. Good work ! to these yound dancers.  Our second week already sounds great as it will be very busy.

So, Happy Easter !

L'École de danse de Québec / fin de la semaine 7 / end of week 7

L'ÉDQ / En répétition / In rehearsal

Bonjour, 

Eh bien, l’étape de L’École de danse de Québec (ÉDQ) est déjà terminée pour nous.  Nous sommes en route pour Ottawa déjà.  Le temps passe vite !  Nous avons fait du très bon travail à L’ÉDQ et les jeunes danseurs ont bien réagi aux exigences chorégraphiques.  Je crois que ce projet a contribué au renouvellement  de l'énergie printanière dans cette école.  La porte étant ouverte lors des répétitions, les étudiants et les professeurs ont profité de l’occasion pour se laisser porter par la force de l’univers chorégraphique de Jean-Pierre Perreault. 

Ce fut une belle rencontre avec les danseurs ainsi qu’avec les professeurs de l’école.  J’ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer Lyne Binette, la directrice du secteur professionnel de L'ÉDQ.  Au fur et à mesure de ses visites en studio, j’ai vu ses yeux s’agrandir et sa joie profonde de la danse transparaître sur son visage.  Souvent accompagnée de sa complice Johanne Dor, elle est venue se ressourcer dans le travail exécuté par les jeunes.   Je remercie aussi Johanne pour sa douce présence rassurante, et bien sûr pour sa joie. Merci aux danseurs pour leur attention indéfectible, leur endurance et leur confiance en nous. Merci à Lydia et Mario pour la suite du travail.  Un gros merci à Joëlle pour ton enthousiasme et ton support.  Et merci encore Lyne d’être venue à notre rencontre...

Hello !

Well, our work in Quebec City is already behind us and we are on our way to Ottawa. Time goes by so quickly !  We worked well and hard at L’École de danse de Québec (EDQ) and the young dancers reacted positively to the demands of the choreographic work.  I think that the rehearsals of this project contributed to the renewal of the springtime energy in the school.  The door being open during the afternoon, students and teachers alike were tempted to observe and were taken by the strenght of Jean-Pierre Perrault’s choreographic work.

It was a good meeting with the students and the teachers of the school.  I had the pleasure of meeting with Lyne Binette, the director of the professional sector.  As she came more often to rehearsals, I saw her eyes open widely and her profound joy of dance surface as time went by.  Often accompanied by her colleague Johanne Dor, she came to renew her inspiration and take pleasure in watching the young dancers at work.  I also want to thank Johanne for her joy and her reassuring presence.  Thank you to the dancers for their undivided attention, their trust and endurance.  Thank you to Lydia and Mario for following through with the rehearsal process. A warm thank you to Joëlle for her enthousiasm and support.  And again thank you to Lyne for coming toward us...
